One large Jesus panel at the heart of a calm, cozy bed cover.

About This Large Jesus Panel Granny Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover has one large Jesus panel in the center and 78 plain granny squares around it. The panel is worked in single crochet tapestry, a full figure in a cream robe with open arms, brown hair and beard and a golden halo on a dusty blue background. The granny squares are solid double crochet in dusty blue, sage green and taupe, each with a cream edge, joined in a neat grid and finished with a cream scalloped border. The finished size is about 76 by 84 inches.

You will use double crochet, single crochet, tapestry color changes and loose whipstitch seams. It suits an intermediate maker who wants a long, peaceful project and an heirloom for a faith-filled home.

Why You'll Love This Large Jesus Panel Granny Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love that most of this cover is simple, restful work. The plain squares are easy to carry and work anywhere, and the tapestry panel is the one project you can really settle into, a few rows at a time.

It makes a thoughtful gift for a baptism, a wedding or a new home. The calm colors sit well in a bedroom, and the large figure in the middle gives the whole cover a quiet focal point.

Switch Things Up

Try a warm palette of cream, soft rose and sage, or navy, gray and cream. Work the panel alone with a plain border for a wall hanging of about 25 by 33 inches. For a throw, make a 6 by 7 grid with a smaller 2 by 3 square panel on a plain background. You can also swap the figure for a large cross or a Good Shepherd with a lamb, or finish with a plain single crochet border instead of the scallops.

— Central Jesus Panel (Make 1) :

Use the 4.0 mm (G-6) hook. The panel is worked flat in single crochet tapestry, 96 stitches wide and 144 rows tall, from the bottom up. DB is dusty blue, CR is cream, BR is brown, SK is skin tone and GD is gold.
Each band line lists how many stitches to work in each color, in order across the row. For example, DB 26, CR 44, DB 26 means 26 stitches in dusty blue, 44 in cream, then 26 in dusty blue. Every band is the same read from either end, so you never have to flip the chart on wrong side rows.
Carry the colors you are not using inside your stitches, and change color on the last yarn over of the stitch before the new color. Use a row counter and ch 1 and turn at the end of every row.
Row 1: With DB, ch 97. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (96 sc)
Rows 2 to 14: Bottom of the picture: DB 96 in every row. (96 sc per row)
Rows 15 to 26: Hem of the robe: DB 26, CR 44, DB 26. (96 sc per row)
Rows 27 to 50: Lower robe: DB 30, CR 36, DB 30. (96 sc per row)
Rows 51 to 58: Hands and lower sleeves: DB 14, SK 4, CR 60, SK 4, DB 14. (96 sc per row)
Rows 59 to 72: Open sleeves: DB 18, CR 60, DB 18. (96 sc per row)
Rows 73 to 78: Shoulders: DB 22, CR 52, DB 22. (96 sc per row)
Rows 79 to 84: Chest: DB 28, CR 40, DB 28. (96 sc per row)
Rows 85 to 88: Collar: DB 36, CR 24, DB 36. (96 sc per row)
Rows 89 to 94: Beard: DB 32, BR 32, DB 32. (96 sc per row)
Rows 95 to 112: Face with hair and beard at the sides: DB 32, BR 6, SK 20, BR 6, DB 32. (96 sc per row)
Rows 113 to 120: Top of the hair: DB 32, BR 32, DB 32. (96 sc per row)
Rows 121 to 124: Halo: DB 34, GD 28, DB 34. (96 sc per row)
Rows 125 to 144: Sky above the figure: DB 96 in every row. Fasten off after Row 144 and weave in the ends. (96 sc per row)
Eyes: with dark brown embroidery floss, work two tiny straight stitches on Row 104, one over stitch 44 and one over stitch 53, counting from the left edge of the panel.

— Panel Edging (Make 1, cream) :

Work this after the eyes are embroidered, with the 4.0 mm (G-6) hook. The edging gives you a firm edge to sew the squares to.
Round 1: Join cream with a sl st in the top right corner st. Ch 1, 3 sc in the same st. Sc in each of the next 94 sts across the top, 3 sc in the last st. Work 144 sc down the left side, one in each row end. Work 3 sc in the first foundation ch, sc in each of the next 94 chs across the bottom, 3 sc in the last ch. Work 144 sc up the right side, one in each row end. Join with a sl st to the first sc and fasten off. (488 sc)

— Layout :

The cover is 9 squares wide and 10 squares long, 90 spaces in all. The panel fills 12 of them (3 wide and 4 tall) in the center, which leaves 78 granny squares, 26 of each color. B is dusty blue, S is sage green and T is taupe.
Rows 1 and 10: T B S T B S T B S (9 squares)
Rows 2 and 8: B S T B S T B S T (9 squares)
Rows 3 and 9: S T B S T B S T B (9 squares)
Row 4: T B S, then the top row of the panel, then T B S (6 squares)
Row 5: B S T, then the panel, then B S T (6 squares)
Row 6: S T B, then the panel, then S T B (6 squares)
Row 7: T B S, then the bottom row of the panel, then T B S (6 squares)

— Border :

Work the border after everything is joined and blocked. Use the 4.0 mm (G-6) hook and cream. Your Round 1 count may differ by a few stitches depending on how tightly you joined. If it does, adjust the number of sc2tog so the total divides by 8.
Round 1: Join cream with a sl st in any outer corner st. Ch 1, 3 sc in the same st. Sc in each st along the edge, including both corner sts at every seam, and work 3 sc in each of the other 3 outer corner sts. Work sc2tog 6 times, spaced evenly along the sides and never at a corner. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (952 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in the same st. *Skip the next 3 sts, 5 dc in the next st, skip the next 3 sts, sc in the next st; repeat from * 117 more times. Skip the next 3 sts, 5 dc in the next st, skip the next 3 sts and join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off and weave in the ends. (119 shells of 5 dc and 119 sc)

Assembly Instructions

  1. Block all 78 granny squares to about 8 inches (20 cm) square and block the finished panel with its edging to about 24 by 32 inches (61 by 81 cm).
  2. Lay everything out following the Layout section, with the panel in the center and the squares around it, and check that the colors never touch the same color along a side.
  3. Join the squares of Rows 1 to 3 and Rows 8 to 10 into two strips of 9 squares each, then join the three squares on each side of the panel into two columns of 4 squares each.
  4. Pin each column to the side edge of the panel at every 8 inch mark, easing the edging stitches to fit, and whipstitch loosely with cream yarn.
  5. Sew the top strip above the panel and the bottom strip below it in the same way, then join the finished center section to the top and bottom rows.
  6. Work the Border around the whole cover, then weave in all the ends.
  7. Block the finished cover flat and let it dry fully before using it.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Letting the squares drift in size. The panel is 3 squares wide, so check your first square against 8 inches and go down a hook size if it is larger, because a small difference adds up across the cover.

Skipping the corner pattern. If a corner is worked as 3 dc instead of 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, the square curls and will not sit flat, so check that every corner space holds a ch 2 on each round.

Pulling carried yarn too tight in the panel, which puckers the picture. Let the strands lie loose inside the stitches and check the width stays at 96 stitches.

Losing your place in the panel. Use a row counter and mark the start of each band, because the bands look alike.

Important Notes

Gauge: in the panel, 16 sc and 18 rows measure 4 inches (10 cm). A granny square should measure about 8 inches after blocking.

Yardages are estimates, so keep a spare ball of each main color and use yarn from the same dye lot.

Cotton has little stretch, so block on a flat surface and let the pieces dry fully before joining.

Wash in cool water on a gentle cycle and dry flat to keep the stitches and the picture neat.

I hope this cover finds a place in someone's bedroom, and in your hands one square at a time. Take your time with the panel, enjoy each row of the picture, and make it your own.

You Ask, We Answer

How big is the finished bed cover?

The grid is 9 squares by 10 squares at about 8 inches each, so 72 by 80 inches, and the scalloped border brings it to about 76 by 84 inches. That suits a full or queen bed with a good drape.

Can I make just the Jesus panel?

Yes. Work the panel and its edging, then add the border for a wall hanging of about 25 by 33 inches. You can also add a few rounds of granny squares around it to make a small throw.

How do I wash and care for the cover?

Machine wash cool on a gentle cycle or hand wash, and lay it flat to dry. Avoid hot water and strong bleach so the colors and the picture stay neat.
