About This Poinsettia Lace Disc Christmas Table Runner Crochet Pattern Pattern

This Christmas table runner is about 38 inches long and 9 inches wide. It is a zigzag chain of 13 round discs, 7 cream lace discs edged with red bobbles and 6 dark green spiral discs, sewn together where they overlap.

Five poinsettias with gold bead centers run down the middle, with dark green and olive leaves, red berry clusters and tiny white daisies tucked in between. It is worked in medium weight cotton, so the discs lie flat on the table.

Why You'll Love This Poinsettia Lace Disc Christmas Table Runner Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love that you can make the whole runner one disc at a time. Each lace disc takes an evening, so it never feels like a huge project.

The poinsettias are my favorite part. Every petal is a small pointed shape, and when you stack two layers with a ring of gold beads in the middle, they look like real flowers.

Switch Things Up

Try white poinsettias with silver beads on pale blue and cream discs for a winter table, or make the flowers in deep orange and gold with olive discs for fall. You can also swap the green spiral discs for plain red ones, or use chunky yarn with a 5.0 mm hook for a bigger runner with fewer pieces.

— Cream Lace Disc (Make 7) :

Use cream and the 3.5 mm hook. Join every round with a sl st to the top of the first st. Each finished disc measures about 5 inches across.
Round 1: ch 3 (counts as dc), 11 dc in mr, join to top of ch 3 (12)
Round 2: ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around, join to top of ch 3 (24)
Round 3: ch 1, sc in same st, *ch 3, skip 1 st, sc in next st*, repeat 11 times, ch 3, skip last st, join to first sc (12 sc + 12 ch-3 sps)
Round 4: sl st into first ch-3 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in same sp, sc in next ch-3 sp, *5 dc in next ch-3 sp, sc in next ch-3 sp*, repeat 5 times, join to top of ch 3 (30 dc + 6 sc = 36)

Round 8: join red in any st, ch 1, *sc in next st, bobble in next st*, repeat 30 times, join to first sc, fasten off (60)
Push each bobble to the outside of the disc as you work it, so the red edge looks like a row of tiny pom-poms.

Backstitch one line of red yarn from the base to the tip of each petal for the center vein.

— Small Poinsettia Petal (Make 30) :

Use red and the 3.5 mm hook. Each large flower uses 6 of these petals on top, and the mini flower at the top of the runner uses 6.
Round 1: ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next 2 ch, dc in next 2 ch, hdc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch, then working in the bottom loops of the foundation ch: hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 ch, hdc in next 2 ch, sc in last ch, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off leaving a tail (15)

Round 2: *ch 3, sl st in next st*, repeat 6 times, fasten off leaving a tail (6 petals)
Sew a gold bead in the center of each daisy.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Block every Cream Lace Disc and Green Spiral Disc flat to about 5 inches across and let them dry completely.
  2. Lay the discs out in a zigzag, starting and ending with a Cream Lace Disc and alternating lace and spiral discs, with each disc overlapping the next by about one third and shifting left and right of the center line.
  3. Sew the discs together with matching yarn at three points along each overlap, so the runner lies flat and stays in one long line.
  4. For each large poinsettia, lay 8 Large Poinsettia Petals in a ring with the tips pointing out, sew the bases together, place 6 Small Poinsettia Petals on top between them, and sew a cluster of 7 gold beads in the center. For the mini flower, use only 6 Small Poinsettia Petals and 3 gold beads.
  5. Sew the 4 large poinsettias down the center line over the overlaps, and the mini poinsettia at the top end of the runner.
  6. Tuck pairs of Leaves under and around every flower, alternating dark green and olive, and sew them down at the base.
  7. Sew the Berries in clusters of 3 to 5 and the Daisies in the gaps between the flowers.
  8. Weave in all remaining ends and steam the discs lightly from a distance, keeping the iron away from the flowers.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Losing count in the lace rounds: check that Round 3 has 12 ch-3 spaces and Round 5 has 6 ch-7 loops before you move on.

Forgetting the marker on the spiral discs: move it up every round, or your increases will drift and the disc will not lie flat.

Making the petals too loose: use firm tension so the petals hold their points and the flowers do not flop.

Sewing the discs together too tightly: keep the stitches loose at the overlaps so the runner can lie flat.

Important Notes

Gauge does not need to be exact, but keep your tension even so all 13 discs come out the same size.

Blocking makes the lace open up and the discs lie flat, so do not skip it.

Hand wash cold, press out the water gently and lay it flat to dry, and take care with the bead centers.

I hope these poinsettias bring a little Christmas cheer to your table. Happy hooking!

You Ask, We Answer

How big is the finished runner?

About 38 inches long and 9 inches wide, and you can add or remove a pair of discs to change the length.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes. Light weight cotton with a 3.0 mm hook makes smaller discs, and chunky yarn with a 5.0 mm hook makes a larger runner, so adjust the number of discs to fit your table.

How do I wash it?

Hand wash in cold water, gently press out the water and lay it flat to dry. Re-block the lace discs if they lose their shape.
