Showpiece Runner

Five layered poinsettias in red and cream make it the star of the table.

About This Red and White Poinsettia Table Runner Crochet Pattern Pattern

This Christmas table runner has three deep red poinsettias and two cream poinsettias in a row, each with a golden bead center. Dark green leaves and little red berry clusters fill the gaps between them, so the whole runner looks like a garland laid down the middle of the table.

Each piece is a small motif worked on its own and then sewn to its neighbours with no base needed. The finished runner measures about 11 inches wide and 44 inches long, and it suits crocheters who enjoy detail and want a real heirloom for the holidays.

Why You'll Love This Red and White Poinsettia Table Runner Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love how the red and cream flowers alternate down the table. The petals look carved even though they are only simple stitches, and the green leaves make every flower stand out.

Because every motif is small, you can work on it in short sessions and still see progress every evening.

Switch Things Up

Make all five poinsettias in red for a traditional look, or use pink and cream for a softer table. You can swap the gold beads for gold buttons, use two shades of green for the leaves, or make a shorter version with three flowers for a side table.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Block all the poinsettia layers, leaves and berries flat and let them dry.
  2. Lay the five poinsettias in a line on a table, starting and ending with a red one and alternating red, cream, red, cream, red. Leave about 1 inch between flowers.
  3. Place 4 dark green leaves around each poinsettia and tuck a sage leaf between the flowers so the leaves fan out like a garland.
  4. Pin everything in place, then sew the leaf tips and poinsettia petals to each other with small stitches so the runner holds together as one piece.
  5. Sew the berries in clusters of three near the leaves and between the flowers.
  6. Stitch a gold bead into the center of each poinsettia with sewing thread, then weave in all ends.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Making the chain spikes too tight; keep them loose so the petals lie flat.

Skipping blocking, which leaves the poinsettia petals curled; pin them out as they dry.

Sewing the poinsettia layers with the petals lined up; turn the top layer so the petals alternate.

Sewing the motifs on before laying them out; arrange everything first so the red and cream flowers are balanced.

Important Notes

Gauge does not need to be exact, but a firm tension keeps the petals crisp.

Cotton yarn holds its shape best for the poinsettias.

Hand wash gently in cool water and lay flat to dry; remove the beads first if you plan to wash it often.

I hope this runner makes your Christmas table feel a little more special. Happy hooking!
