Sunny Table Decor

A long runner with 5 sunflowers, leaves, wheat and bobbles.

About This Sunflower Crochet Table Runner Pattern Pattern

This table runner is a long cream lace panel with five crocheted sunflowers in yellow and burnt orange, green leaves, little wheat ears and a border of colorful bobbles. It measures about 13 by 40 inches, so it fits a kitchen island or a dining table.

You crochet the panel, the flowers and the bobbles separately, then sew everything together. Each part is small and simple, so you can work on it a little at a time.

Why You'll Love This Sunflower Crochet Table Runner Pattern Pattern

I love how a plain cream runner turns into a field of sunflowers. Every flower is a few quick rounds, and the bobbles add a playful pop of color along the edges.

It looks cheerful on the table all fall, and it makes a lovely handmade gift.

Switch Things Up

Try white or sage green for the panel, use pink and cream flowers, or make a shorter runner by working fewer stitches in the foundation chain. You can also make just one sunflower and use it as a coaster or a hair clip.

Foundation: Ch 162.
Row 1: Dc in the 4th ch from the hook and in each ch across. Turn. (160 dc)
Row 2: Ch 3, dc in each dc across, ending with a dc in the top of the turning ch. Turn. (160 dc)
Row 3 (eyelet row): Ch 3, *skip 1 dc, ch 1, dc in each of the next 2 dc.* Repeat from * across, ending with the last dc in the top of the turning ch. Turn. (107 dc, 53 ch-1 sps)
Row 4: Ch 3, *dc in the next ch-1 sp, dc in each of the next 2 dc.* Repeat from * across. Turn. (160 dc)

Rows 25 and 26: Work as Row 2. Do not fasten off. (160 dc)

— Scalloped Border (Make 1) :

The border goes around the whole panel and gives the scalloped edge. Use cream.
Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each dc along the top edge, 3 sc in the corner, 26 sc evenly spaced down the short edge (1 per row end), 3 sc in the corner, sc along the foundation ch edge in each ch, 3 sc in the corner, 26 sc up the other short edge, 3 sc in the last corner. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (160 sc along each long edge, 26 sc along each short edge, 3 sc in each corner, 384 sc total)
Round 2: Ch 1. *Skip 2 sc, 5 dc in the next sc, skip 2 sc, sl st in the next sc.* Repeat from * around, placing the middle dc of a scallop in the center sc of each corner. If a side does not divide evenly, skip 1 or 3 sc instead of 2 in a few spots. Join with a sl st, fasten off and weave in the ends. (about 64 scallops, 320 dc)

— Sunflower (Make 5) :

Make 5 sunflowers: 3 with yellow petals and 2 with burnt orange petals. Every center is dark brown. Each sunflower is about 3.5 inches across.

— Leaf (Make 10) :

Make 10 leaves in green.
Leaf: Ch 9. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, hdc in the next ch, dc in each of the next 3 ch, hdc in the next ch, 3 sc in the last ch for the tip. Working along the other side of the foundation ch: hdc in the next ch, dc in each of the next 3 ch, hdc in the next ch, sc in the last ch. Sl st to the first st, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing. (17 sts)

— Wheat Ear (Make 6) :

Make 6 wheat ears in tan.
Wheat Ear: Ch 14. Sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each of the next 3 ch for the stem. In each of the next 9 ch, work (sl st, ch 2, sl st) in the same ch to make a grain. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing. (4 stem sl st, 9 grains)

— Mini Bobble (Make 80) :

Make 80 mini bobbles: 20 each in red, burnt orange, mustard and green. Stuff each one lightly before closing.
Round 1: Magic ring, 6 sc in the ring. (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rounds 3 and 4: Sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Round 5: Stuff the bobble lightly. *Sc2tog.* Repeat from * around. (6 sc)
Finish: Fasten off, close the hole and leave a tail for sewing.

— Assembly Layout :

Block the cream panel flat to 13 by 40 inches before you sew anything on.
Layout: Sew the 5 sunflowers along the center line of the panel, about 7 inches apart, alternating yellow, orange, yellow, orange, yellow. Sew 2 leaves beside each sunflower, one leaf angled to each side. Sew a wheat ear between every second pair of sunflowers.
Bobbles: Sew 30 bobbles along each long edge, about 1 inch in from the scalloped border and evenly spaced, mixing the 4 colors. Sew 10 bobbles across each short end. (80 bobbles)

Assembly Instructions

  1. Weave in all ends on every piece.
  2. Block the cream panel flat to 13 by 40 inches and let it dry completely.
  3. Pin the sunflowers along the center of the panel, alternating yellow and orange.
  4. Sew each sunflower on with a yarn needle, stitching around the brown center and the petal base.
  5. Pin and sew the leaves, then the wheat ears, between the flowers.
  6. Sew the bobbles in two lines along the long edges and one line across each short end, mixing the colors.
  7. Check that everything lies flat, then press lightly with a damp cloth.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Pulling the foundation chain too tight makes the runner curl at the edge. Use a larger hook for the chain if needed.

Forgetting to count the turning ch 3 changes the stitch count. Count 160 stitches after every row.

Stitching the flowers on in a straight line looks stiff. Stagger them slightly for a natural look.

Overstuffing the bobbles makes them lumpy. Use only a small pinch of fiberfill.

Important Notes

Gauge is 16 dc and 8 rows to 4 inches. If you have more stitches, go up a hook size.

The yarn amounts are estimates, so check them against your own gauge before you start.

Wash the runner gently by hand in cool water and dry it flat.

I hope this runner brings a little sunshine to your table. Take your time with each flower, and enjoy every stitch.

You Ask, We Answer

How big is the finished runner?

About 13 by 40 inches. Add or remove foundation chains in multiples of 3 to change the length.

Can I use a different yarn?

Yes. Any worsted weight cotton works, but check your gauge and adjust the hook size to match.

How do I wash it?

Hand wash in cool water, press out the water with a towel and lay it flat to dry.
